Stress is the result of an imbalance between a person’s resources for coping and the demands being made on them. When stressed, life can feel like a struggle and overwhelming. People can become irritable and low; they can feel tired, suffer poor concentration and sleeping difficulties. For many people there may be a particular trigger for their stress, such as a significant change at work or home. This change may have seemed like the “straw that broke the camel’s back”. For others, there may not be a particular triggering event as they may instead sense how life’s expectations have become simply too demanding and overwhelming. Within psychological therapy people can start to understand the cause of their stress and learn ways to change the behaviours that may maintain their stress levels.
