OCD
is an anxiety related condition that has two fundamental aspects. Firstly, there
are obsessive thoughts that keep intruding into the mind despite all efforts to
stop them. These thoughts may be focussed on contamination, harm occurring or
going against social norms. Secondly, these intrusive thoughts are accompanied
by compulsive behaviours or rituals that are carried out relentlessly to reduce
anxiety despite a person trying to resist them. These behaviours may include
repeatedly washing ones hands, checking, hoarding, counting or other rituals.
These thoughts and behaviours can become quite distressing and can end up
dominating a person’s life. People with OCD will tend to avoid certain objects
or situations that lead to anxiety. You can learn ways to overcome and stop your
symptoms of OCD with the help of psychological therapy.
