The most prominent feature of depression is sad or low mood. Other possible signs may include lethargy, trouble with sleep, change in appetite, difficulty concentrating and making decisions, loss of interest and pessimistic thoughts. Depression can range from mild mood fluctuations and episodes of low mood to severe clinical depression which is often experienced with more marked physical symptoms. A depressive experience can be triggered by a series of life events that are difficult to deal with or it can be a longstanding condition that a person may have experienced over many years. Depression is not easy to ‘snap out of’ but it is a treatable condition and there are ways to free yourself from it with the help of psychological therapy.
